How Google Penguin Works

Have you heard of Google Penguin before? It is one of Google`s updates, which are made to control the observance of Google`s guidelines by Internet users. It can affect the ranking of your website or even wipe it off the search results, so you had better familiarize yourself with how it works or ask for advice from penguin recovery service.

Every SEO or website owner wants his site to have a high ranking. But it requires lots of effort, and that`s why so many people try to find the ways to ensure the high ranking of their websites in an easier way. Google Penguin is one of the tools the company uses to make SEOs and site owners «play fair and square». It acts as a filter and sorts out link spam.

What is link spam? This term refers to all types of links created using black hat methods. Such links can be bought at a link exchange market, created using special software or one can get them in some other way. The main point is that they are useless for Internet users.

For the time being Google has presented 5 Penguin updates that are designed to deal with the following problems:

# 1 Over-optimized anchor texts. Keywords are an important SEO tool. They help users find your website on the Internet. Still, it is not advisable to use too many of them. The abundance of the main words makes texts unreadable. That is why Google «disfavors» over-optimized anchor texts.

# 2 «Bad neighborhoods». Links differ. If you want your website to have a high ranking, make sure that all the links are to or from authoritative websites only. You may face some problems in case low-quality websites or the ones containing inappropriate content (e.g. gambling websites) link back to your website. It is also advisable to avoid having links to or from the websites that have «bad neighbors».

# 3 The abundance of links from irrelevant websites. Too many links from websites that are not related to your website at all is a sign that you probably use black hat SEO methods. It is obvious that websites are likely to link back to the sites that have a similar topic or purpose.

# 4 Article spinning. Since writing quality articles requires a great deal of effort, many SEOs use special software to «rewrite» articles from other sites. Such software can create articles using the databases of synonyms. Such content is unique, but it often turns out to be unreadable. So, it does not contribute to the positive user experience.

# 5 Tiered link building. This is a tactic, which involves creating microsites around the main site. Such sites are used for link building. Using this tactic, you do not need to fill your website with quality content for other SEOs to get interested in linking back to your website. You can link back to it yourself. However, if Google learns about such a case, you will have problems.

# 6 Forum spam. Google pays much attention to the usage of links within forums. In case you use exact match anchor texts to link back to the main websites or create fake profiles to leave comments with links, you are likely to get penalized.

Do note that this list is not complete. You may have problems with Google in some other cases. If you do not want to get penalized, you had better avoid using all kinds of black hat SEO tactics and do your best to create high-quality content that will attract the attention of Internet users.

The good news is that in case your website has got penalized you can still «save» it by dealing with all the problems you have created. But there is bad news, too. It is not always possible to get your website back in the search results or on the first page of them. So think twice before trying to find a way around Google`s rules.
